THE #s Game! Woke up at 4:30 am and could not go back to sleep. Yesterday I finished loading my Retro for a weekend trip to Tahoe. I weighed the tongue weight with my Sherline LM 1000 scale. Yikes 620 lbs. That is with 2 full propane tanks up front. I have carefully packed everything heavy, tools, jack, solar panel in the back to lighten the tongue load. So I fill the fresh water tank, at 8.34 lbs/gal. To shift the weight back. When full my tongue weight is 580 lbs. Still over the 500 lbs hitch rating. So I go to bed. When I wake at 4:30am I start to think about my axle rating. The Dexter axle is rated at 4000 lbs. My gross trailer weight with an empty fresh water tank is just under 4000 lbs. I mean I aint carrying gold bricks in the trailer? So I lay awake trying to decide if it is safer to have an over weight tongue or an overweight axle. Cr..p! I decide to get up and empty the fresh water tank. I am already too close to the axle rating. WHY is life so difficult? Oh, sorry, I mean I really just want to go back to sleep and dream about our upcoming weekend in beautiful Lake Tahoe. I sure wish someone else had solved this #s game, like maybe the manufacturer who put on the 4k lb axle for a trailer with an empty weight of close to 3500 lbs.
Ah, just relax and have another cup of coffee!!!!
